Follow-up to GTA Conference

On the 11th June I presented a keynote address at the Global Education –  Geography Teachers Association conference ‘Engaging Students in Geography Years 7-10’,  held at the Nan Tien Temple, Wollongong.

The subject was terrorism, specifically the Impact of the 2002 Bali Bombings. In the address I attempted to show the impact of the bombings on the Balinese people.  I examined impacts in terms of injuries and deaths, the effects on tourism, industry, income employment and education and finally examined the cultural and spiritual impacts of the bombings. In particular I stressed that many Balinese people believed that the bombing was a form of divine retribution.  Such views are directly related to Balinese culture and religion.  The Balinese belief in karma pala, the law of cause and effect leads directly to an understanding of the bombing as divine retribution.

In conclusion I made a few comments about my personal experience of the bombings, as a volunteers at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.

A Powerpoint with notes follows.
